October 8, 2026: A quiet but significant shift has taken place in the race for ONGC’s next Chairman and Managing Director. While the search process has already completed shortlisting and interviews, conflicting signals about the final recommendation have once again put the spotlight on incumbent Arun Kumar Singh.
Singh’s current contractual term ends on 6 December 2026. He is already serving a one-year extension that began on 7 December 2025. Now, sources familiar with the matter say the possibility of yet another short extension is being discussed more seriously than it was even a week ago.
Earlier reports had focused mainly on the seven shortlisted candidates. The new development is different. Multiple accounts now suggest the search-cum-selection committee may not have reached a clear consensus on a single suitable name. When no clear choice emerges, the government has previously chosen continuity. That precedent is exactly why Singh’s name has returned to the conversation.
ONGC is currently pushing several deepwater and exploration projects that are still in critical phases. Leadership transitions at this stage carry operational risk. Singh, who took charge in December 2022 after retiring as BPCL CMD, has already overseen one full term plus a contractual year. Supporters of another short extension argue that giving him limited additional time could protect ongoing work while a permanent successor is finalised.
